Geoff Breese and Julie Gooding won the first event of the Waggaroos Summer Series of Orienteering last Thursday evening.

Starting from Apex Park participants had a choice of 45 minutes or 30 minutes to find the answers to a series of questions about the Lake Albert and Rawlings Park area. Each correct answer scored points and points were deducted for exceeding the time limit. 24 questions were on offer for a total of 245 points.

On the 45 minute course Geoff Breese managed to amass an excellent 180 points but finished 4 minutes over time which reduced his score to 160. This was still enough to hold off Alex Davey (150 points) and Briohny Seaman (145). It was also enough to earn Geoff handicap honours for the evening.

Andrew Earl came orienteering for the first time and did very well finishing fourth with a very competitive 140 points. Kade Mavroudis. Dale Clegg and Will Cronk tied for fifth place with 95 points. Debbie Davey was just behind with 85 points.

It was just as close on the 30 minute course. Julie Gooding scored a very good 70 points ahead of the Farrell Family group and Geri Louis who both finished with 55 points. Joannah McDougall had to settle for fourth place with a very good score of 50.

Jack and Lara Laurent also trying orienteering for the first time scored 30 points, as did Debbie McDougall, to finish just behind the Crossett family (35).

The Summer Series of Orienteering will continue next Thursday evening in Kooringal starting at 6pm from the south side of Henwood Park near Paul Street.
