Stuart Young won Event 4 in the Waggaroos Summer Series of Orienteering conducted in Estella last Thursday evening.

Starting from Manneke Park, Estella the race was restricted to a 30 minute time limit because of the high temperature. Using their map participants had to find the answers to questions about the area within that time limit. Questions included identifying what it was that Mr Manneke made, the type of material used to make specific letterboxes, and particular ornaments in front gardens. Each correct answer scored points and points were deducted for exceeding the time limit.

Wes Campbell set some interesting navigation challenges that made participants think hard about their route choices. Most participants headed north attracted by some high value questions in that direction and were then confronted with decisions about which control sites not to visit as much as which one to take next.

Stuart Young clearly made some tactically smart decisions. Participating in his first event with the Waggaroos, he set a hot pace in the warm conditions collecting an impressive 230 points.

Alex Davey finished second with an excellent 195 points just holding off Izzy Hutchinson and Chantelle Dailey (185) and John Oliver (180).

Peter Orr from the Newcastle Orienteers scored a good 150 to finish just ahead of junior orienteers Jack and Tom Janetzki who were also competing in their first summer series event and tied for 6th place.

The summer series will resume on Thursday 25 January starting at 6 pm from Jannali Pl, Glenfield Park.
