Club Sprint at CSU

Catherine Holland had a big win and took handicap honours in the Waggaroos event conducted at CSU last Sunday.

First time course setter Julie Gooding set some fun courses that weaved between the campus buildings and looped around the more open areas. Participants had to choose routes carefully. Several came unstuck when aiming at an apparently simple route to a stairwell only to find themselves on top of a high wall.

The wet weather did not damper spirits but did damper the shoes and socks with some parts proving to be quite splashy.

Kate Armstrong and Matthew Thomas did very well on the 2.1km course but were no match for Catherine Holland who ripped around to finish almost 13 minutes faster. It was Kate’s first experience of orienteering so a second place was a fine achievement. Eltan Mestan ventured out on his own for the first time and also did very well to finish third just ahead of the improving Edward & Oliver Gunter.

It was much closer on the 3.5km course. Briohny Seaman, although recovering from a leg injury, was strong enough to lead the field home by almost 2 minutes. Alex Davey was not far behind and just held onto second place ahead of his wife, Debbie.
