Cooler temps, hot times!

Geoff Breese and Jonathan Holland were the stand-out performers in the Waggaroos Summer Series of Orienteering event last Thursday.

The cooler conditions were appreciated by participants and the pace was pretty hot. Most contestants found the area a bit trickier than expected. Following the wrong laneway placed them in a different street network than expected and generally it cost considerable time to sort it out.

Starting from the park in Mima St Glenfield participants had a choice of 30 or 45 minute time limits to find the answers to questions about the area. Answers varied in value and there were penalties for exceeding the chosen time limit.. 22 questions worth a total of 240 points were on offer.

Geoff Breese went clockwise around the map and John Oliver went anticlockwise. Both had good runs despite slight deviations from their intended routes and both finished without time penalty. Geoff’s route proved superior picking up an excellent 175 points to John’s 165. Pauline Moore amassed a very good 145 points but suffered a 45 point time penalty for exceeding the time limit by a whopping 8 minutes. Nonetheless her score of 100 placed in third spot.

On the 30 minute course Jonathan Holland showed his competitors a clean pair of heels picking up 140 points. This was almost twice the score of Bob Moore, Wes Campbell and Catherine Holland who finished in a brilliant three way tie for second place with 80 points. Kade Mavroudis scored 40 points after suffering a 30 point time penalty.

Geoff took out handicap honours for the evening but Jonathan has popped to the top of the OY table.
